Procedure of civil wedding registration from abroad
Many couples from all over the world choose Salzburg as the spot of their special day. We are happy that you would like to celebrate your civil wedding in Salzburg. All you need to do is to be found on this website as well as the official website of the city of Salzburg.
STEP 1: Reserve your Wedding date online
You can easily reserve your wedding date online. You can find the form on the website of the registry office. After registration, please confirm your reservation within one week by mail to email@example.com.
STEP 2: Marriage application
After your confirmation of reservation you will get all information about necessary papers and documents and fees within two weeks at least. Than you can collect all papers for the marriage application.
If bride or groom is an Austrian citizen or resides in Austria (regardless of citizenship), the marriage application can be filed at the civil registry office (Standesamt) at the place of residence, the place of marriage or at any registry office in Austria.
If neither the bride or groom is Austrian or does not reside in Austria, the marriage application can be filed at the civil registrar’s office in Salzburg (Standesamt Salzburg), if that is where you are getting married.
You must be both present in person when filing for your marriage license. If neither of you resides in Austria, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org for further information.
To save time and work you can send us all documents by email in advance; so we can check if your papers are accurate and complete.
When filing for your marriage application the civil registry office will at least require the following documents of bride and groom:
Original documents must be submitted (except passport and driving licence). Depending where you come from, some documents may not be older than 4 to 6 months. Please consider, that all documents (except driving license and passport) have to be submitted in original (optionally supplied with an apostil) and translated into german language by a judicial sworn interpreter. Detailed information you will get from our registrars (see step 2).
Fees for your civil marriage are different, depending on time and place of your wedding. The more we have to differ the fees whether you submit austrian documents or documents from abroad. We will inform you about all fees in detail together with the information about necessary documents. Fees have to be discharged in cash. Please expect overall costs of app. € 160,– to € 260,– for a wedding in the marble hall of mirabell palace. The charge is without music.
Please expect overall costs of app. € 335,– to € 422,– for a wedding outside the mirabell palace and appr. € 524,– to € 611,– for Schloss Fuschl.
All charges are without music. If you want live music for your wedding in the marble hall, please expect costs of € 28,– for the organ or € 60,– for the piano.
The procedure of marriage application takes up to 30 to 60 minutes. The courtyard of Mirabell Castle does not provide parking space for the time of the marriage application. If you arrive by car there is parking at “Mirabell Garage” opposite to Mirabell Castle.
STEP 3: Wedding Ceremony
The wedding ceremony in the Mirabell palace takes 20 minutes. Please refer to the wedding calendar for available times and dates. Our registrars will do their very best to make the ceremony as festive and personal as possible. To make sure your wedding runs smoothly, please contact the registry office in advance to select the music for your ceremony.

STEP 4: After the Ceremony
You will be issued 3 international marriage certificates that will be valid in your home country.
No doubt, the civil wedding ceremony in Mirabell Palace is part of your very special day. Please bear in mind, that other couples too want to enjoy their wedding. Therefore everyone should follow a certain code of behavior.
Please inform your guests, that mobiles have to be disconnected or switched to soundless while the ceremony is going on.
Please take care that your guests don´t disturb other bridal couples by being too noisy in the foyer.
It is allowed to take fotos of the cermony in the marble hall. Please inform your photographer, that the shooting should be done as discreet as possible, so that the ceremony will not be disturbed.
Please consider, that the entire mirabell palace as well as the Wolf-Dietrich hall, the columned hall and the castle courtyard is a smoke-free area
Legality of marriage
You can get legally married in Austria. Your marriage will only be valid if it is performed at a civil registry office (Standesamt) and it must be preformed by an official registrar in the presence of two witnesses.
There are no minimum residency requirements to get married in Austria. However, once you have filed your marriage application, there will usually be a waiting period of between two and six weeks before your wedding date is confirmed. You can file your marriage application up to a maximum of six months prior to your wedding date. Please refer to the wedding calendar for available times and dates.
A civil wedding in Salzburg is not connected to nerve-wracking visits to official authorities anymore. Most of the necessary steps can be done from home.
